  1. As Xavier circled me, impatient for his dinner, I noted a darkish lump in his white tummy fluff. Since two hours earlier he’d accompanied me in the garden, I assumed that the lump was a leaf. He hopped in my lap so I flipped him over and reached for the lump. Ewww! Damp and squishy. Litter box refugee? I completed the removal and looked more closely. Double ewww: the lump was a small slug.
