iPad Communications

“On an iPhone, Messages can also send and receive SMS text messages [texting with non-Apple devices]. But by default, iPads can’t send SMS text messages through Apple’s Messages app. Even if you have an iPad with a cellular data plan for mobile internet on the go, you still can’t send SMS text messages unless you use one of the workarounds listed below.” Source: HowtoGeek.

The workarounds involve using a different messaging app (like Whats App), going through an iPhone, or texting to a phone number email address.  However, the latter no longer works for texting to a phone on AT&T as of last year.  (AT&T disabled that capability last year due to security reasons.  I found that out last month when I switched from Verizon to AT&T for my iPhone.  You used to be able to iMessage an Android phone on AT&T with phone_number@txt.att.net.)
