Acronyms

• AP = Access Point
• WAN = wide area network; LAN = local area network;
• CAT 5, CAT 6 – types of Ethernet cables
• ONT = Optical Network Terminal
• MoCA = Multimedia over Coax Alliance

• BBU = battery backup unit
• MAC = Media Access Control – a MAC address is the unique 12-digit hexadecimal number associated with a network hardware interface
• DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol – a DHCP server provides IP addresses
• DNS = Dynamic Name Services – a DNS server translates IP labels into IP addresses (for remote communication)

Channels

• 2.4GHz Wireless channels 1 – 11. Use 1 for router closest to a microwave, 6 for adjacent (but not to each other) routers.
• Microwaves heat at 2.45GHz (closest to channel 11).
• ZigBee protocol devices operate between channels 11 and 26; by default they generally operate closer to Channel 11.
