Controlling Your Bookshelves

The following Japanese word is a very useful one-word starting point to discussing a predilection bordering on affliction – particularly in earthquake country where a full bookcase is a potential wall of projectiles.  I have two methods for keeping my bookshelves in check: (1) for each book I buy I must remove and donate at least one book from my shelves, and (2) I check out books from the library.
