Fruit Tree Care

Crabapple

Susceptible to powdery mildew – some varieties more than others. Plant in an area that gets good sun and that has good air movement. (Keep the sweet peas away from the crapapple since it also gets powdery mildew in Alameda.) Spores spread by the wind. Prune before the blooming season (the fungus overwinters in the buds) and to ensure that the tree gets plenty of sun and air circulation. Prune off affected branches and clear the dropped leaves.
