MLF Burial

Funeral Director

2026/5/25 PEG signed contracts (phone and then Docusign) with Charles An, Sunnyside, and put down a deposit of $695. By 2pm PT, the driver from Sunnyside arrived at Kindred to transport the body to Sunnyside.

2026/5/24 RMF (without YSF) visited Sunnyside Cremation and Funeral in Garden Grove and Buena Park. (Their Garden Grove location was temporarily closed due to the Garden Grove evacuation zone.) He met with Charles An, a funeral director. This is the place that PEG picked based on their numerous 5-star reviews on Yelp (basically there were a few complaints during the Covid lockdowns).  Charles was very knowledgeable – including about dealing with the VA and death certificates – and suggested Costco or Amazon if we want to supply our own casket.  Really the only glitch yesterday (May 24) was that their Garden Grove location (which is closer to Westminster) was in the temporary evacuation zone – but I expect that problem will be cleared up soon.

2026/5/24 RMF and YSF visited Peek Funeral Home in Westminster. YSF liked this place, RMF not so much – the staffer with whom they spoke had to ask a manager if they had experience with VA burials. This place gets very mixed reviews on Yelp.  It’s Vietnamese, supposedly features Buddhist services, is expensive, and can be brusque and insensitive.

Caskets

2026/05/26 Overnight Caskets manufactures their products in the United States. (Charles shared an experience with a handle breaking off of a Chinese-made casket during the graveside ceremony.) If we order the casket too far in advance, we will get charged a storage fee.

2026/05/25 YSF with RMF selected caskets online for MLF and YSF. Overnight Caskets, Sheffield Gold with Ivory Velvet Interior – Metal Casket, sale price of $1,399.99. They off a pre-purchase (i.e. layaway) option which both ensures the casket selection for YSF’s burial as well as locking-in the price.
